Sarah Mansfield Greens MLC for Western Victoria

I’m proud to be your representative

The needs and challenges facing regional and rural communities have been overlooked for far too long. As the Greens’ first regional MP and as Co-Deputy Leader, I will fight for the changes our communities need.

I’m proud to represent you in State Parliament, and I’m committed to making a real difference to the lives of people in our region, with better access to healthcare, housing people can actually afford and urgent action on climate change.

What I’m fighting for

“Western Victoria now has a strong, Green, representative in State Parliament, fighting for action on climate change and what people in the regions need.”

ABOUT ME

Hi, I'm Sarah

I live in Geelong, on Wadawurrung Country, with my young family.

As a GP, I spent time working with people who were homeless. This experience highlighted the failure of our social and political systems, being lived by people struggling in our communities every day.

It was what motivated me to serve on local council before having the great privilege of becoming your first Greens State MP.

I hear regularly from constituents who are struggling to make ends meet in Western Victoria. Their stories make it clear that too often, access to housing, affordable food and healthcare is determined by your postcode and income rather than by need. This has to change.

I’m committed to bringing the voices of regional and rural communities to our State Parliament. I’d love to hear what matters most to you and what you want to see change for the better in Western Victoria.

Last week was a big week in Parliament for housing, pill testing, voluntary assisted dying and our Party Room as we farewelled the formidable Samantha Ratnam.

We:
🧱 Announced our plans for a public builder that would see the Victorian government build homes to be rented and sold to first-home buyers at below-market prices, saving them thousands of dollars

💊 Passed a pill testing bill 🥳 locking in 10 mobile testing sites at festivals across the state and a fixed testing site in Melbourne CBD. This will save lives, in particular for the upcoming summer festival season

👩‍⚕️ Introduced a Bill to reform Voluntary Assisted Dying laws in Victoria, to reform the state’s lagging regulations

👋 And on Thursday, we farewelled @samantharatnam from the Victorian Parliament, a trusted friend and colleague, after 7 years of service in the Upper House. It was a bittersweet farewell, as we wish her all the best in her campaign to turn Wills Green.

With just two sitting weeks left for the year, there is still a lot of work to do. I’m looking forward to getting back to Geelong and continuing to bring the issues of Western Victoria to the Parliament and continue to advocate for people and the planet.

The Melbourne Cup certainly doesn’t stop the nation any more - every year there are fewer and fewer spectators drawn to this carnival of gambling-fuelled animal cruelty.

Yesterday, I introduced a Private Members Bill to parliament to reform Victoria’s Voluntary Assisted Dying laws. Victoria once led the way by being the first state in Australia to introduce VAD. But years later, our laws are outdated and we lag behind the rest of the country.

Many so-called ‘safeguards’ are, in fact, restrictive barriers, and the very people these laws were designed to help are being prevented from accessing VAD. This is supported by data that shows that relatively fewer Victorians access VAD compared to other states, and a significant proportion who start the process die before they can complete it.

This Bill represents the hard work families and VAD advocates have put in for years to ensure that people have choice and dignity at the end of life.

We urge other parties to support these much needed changes.

Last week, I had the absolute honour of being invited to listen to this years’ cohort of Victorian Pathways to Politics give speeches in parliament. They were the most impressive and inspiring group of women, reflecting many different perspectives and motivations, but united in their desire to have decision-making bodies reflect the true diversity of our community.

I lucky enough to have been part of this incredible program for women in its very first year, 2016. It was so special to be able to come back and see it growing and thriving, and meet so many brilliant women considering a future in politics. It’s now up to all of us to support them to get there!

This week, I’ll be introducing a Private Members Bill into the Victorian Parliament to improve access and equity for people seeking voluntary assisted dying in Victoria.

As the first state to introduce voluntary assisted dying, the laws were drafted with safeguards, but now years later these are restrictive barriers that are causing harm and stopping people from being able to access the scheme. It was a privilege to announce this reform yesterday at the Go Gentle Voluntary Assisted Dying Conference in Brisbane, alongside stakeholders who have campaigned tirelessly to ensure all Australians can die with dignity.

Responses to our Cost of Living survey are flooding in, and people’s experiences are what we feared; many Victorians are forgoing essential healthcare due to growing out-of-pocket costs. We must do better.

The government can address the increasing costs of healthcare to ensure that your access to healthcare doesn’t depend on your postcode, age or income. If you’d like to have your say on how the cost of living is affecting your health, head to the link in bio to complete the survey.
