Despite being legal, access to abortion, maternity services, sexual and reproductive healthcare remains a postcode lottery in Victoria and Australia.
Reproductive healthcare is the right of all Victorians, yet services caring for sexual and reproductive health are far and few between. If you live in regional and rural areas, your access is even more limited. For example, if you live in or near Melbourne, you will generally have more choice in the number of abortion services that are available to you. Only a small number of services in Victoria provide abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy and these are generally located in Melbourne.
I know from my time working as a GP that deciding to have an abortion is never easy, even when you have financial security, access to services in your area and support around you to make looking at options easier.
We need to make sure our health system provides contraception and abortion care access to everyone, regardless of their financial and life circumstances, and regardless of where they live.
This is what I will continue to stand for alongside the Greens.
